On Lightness.

Written 20 Oct 2026 · ~5 minute read

I take things seriously. The training, the building, the reading, the person I am deciding to become — all of it gets the full weight. I would not change that. But I know what depth does when nothing lightens it. It curdles. The seriousness turns inward and goes sour. Every setback becomes a referendum. Every plan becomes a contract with yourself that you cannot afford to break. You stop living the life and start auditing it for compliance.

The mature move is not to care less. It is to hold two sentences at once and refuse to let either one win. Everything matters. It is never that deep. Neither cancels the other. The work is keeping them in the same hand.

I did not learn that by thinking about it. I learned it in August, in Valencia, in a week that removed almost everything I usually lean on.

Before the trip I decided to leave the laptop at home. That was the intent: a week with nothing to build and nothing to check, no work to drift back to at the edge of an evening. I wanted to be where I was, completely.

The first night took my phone. That was not the intent. But the accident and the decision were pointing the same way. I had chosen to go half analog, and the night finished the job. Analog by intent, then analog by force. I could spend the week resenting the second half, or I could notice that it was the first half, carried further than I had the nerve to carry it.

So I copied maps into a notebook and navigated by them. I asked for directions. There was nobody to answer to — no messages stacking up, no thread to keep alive, no version of me running somewhere else in parallel. The days got wider. A notebook map shows you what you copied and nothing else, which means you arrive having actually looked at the street.

Then Buñol. La Tomatina is the least serious thing I did all year — a narrow street, thousands of people, fruit to the knees. There is no way to do it with dignity and no reason to try. Nobody rehearses a tomato fight. You are in it or you are watching it. I have written that contact beats rehearsal. This was contact with no armour at all.

I treat the life I am building as infrastructure. The training schedule, the journal, the standards on the whiteboard, the tools I write to run my days. All of it exists to hold the person up. Valencia ran a test I had never designed: take the infrastructure away and see whether the person stands on his own.

What the infrastructure does, most days, is remind. The schedule reminds me to train. The journal reminds me to think. Take the reminders away and the real question appears: was anything actually installed, or had I been outsourcing the person to the system? A week is a small sample. It is also an honest one, because there was nothing to fake it with.

It held. Not because I gritted my way through. Because the things I had been practising turned out to be portable. They had stopped being tools and started being posture. Detachment from outcome: the phone was gone and the week was still there, whole. Agency intact: nothing that happened decided what I did next. I stopped grading the days. Things happened; I answered them. The answering was mine.

That is what lightness is. Not indifference. Lightness is what depth feels like when it no longer needs the circumstances to cooperate. The seriousness is all still there. It has stopped gripping.

Lightness has a cheap twin, and the line between them is worth naming. Carelessness says nothing matters, so nothing needs doing. Lightness says it matters, I will handle it, and it does not get to own the rest of my week. The careless version of that week skips the map and hopes. The light version copies the map, then stops thinking about the map.

The tipping point is specific. It is the moment it’s never that deep gets used to excuse the things that are that deep. The body still needs looking after. The people who need to reach you still need a way to. A promise made before the trip is still a promise. Lightness that stops answering for anything is not freedom. It is absence with a better story. The discipline is knowing which weights carry the structure and putting down only the rest.

I have written that flow is something you stop obstructing, not something you manufacture. Lightness is the same principle applied to weight. You do not lift a heavy week by straining at it. You stop adding to it. The current was there the whole time. That week I stopped swimming against it, because I had nothing left to swim with.

I have also written that alone is not lonely. Valencia tested the other direction. Unreachable is not alone. Nobody to answer to is not the same as nobody around. The week was full of people — the ones I asked for the way, the thousands in one street — and the contact was better for having no screen between us.

The laptop I left on purpose. The phone I would never have put down myself. The accident went further than my intent, and the week was better for it. That is worth knowing about the intent: it was right, and it did not go far enough on its own.

Everything matters. It is never that deep. Hold one without the other and you get a weight or a shrug. Hold both and you get a week you would not give back.

The decomposition — 20 Oct 2026

14 / 25 · On Lightness — Five movements, one lift

Notes / On Lightness · Design decomposition

  1. 01Two sentences

The opening holds two sentences in the same hand, everything matters and it is never that deep, and refuses to let either one win.

  2. 02Intent, then force

The laptop stayed home by decision and the phone went by accident, and I read the accident as the decision carried further than I had the nerve to carry it.

  3. 03Contact

Notebook maps and the least serious thing I did all year stand for contact with no armour at all.

  4. 04The lift

Every other divider is a plain rule; the one bespoke divider sags under a dot and straightens as it lifts, set where the infrastructure is taken away.

  5. 05The test

With the reminders gone the practice held as posture, and the movement ends on the definition: depth that no longer needs the circumstances to cooperate.

  6. 06The cheap twin

Lightness is separated from carelessness at one tipping point: using never that deep to excuse the things that are that deep.

  7. 07The close

The pull quote returns to the opening pair and names what each gives alone, a weight or a shrug, and what both give held together.

  8. 08The bridges

Three strands leave the page: to On Participation from the contact, then to On Flow and On Solitude from the last movement, each principle tested on weight.

  9. 09The satellites

Two reflections orbit it on the constellation, one on going analog by force and one on the two sentences held together.
